The 400sqm site was far from level but, with a brief to design a sleek modern residence, the architect produced an imaginative plan that works beautifully within the landscape.
The late afternoon summer sun has been tamed by having no windows that directly face west. Instead, the wall has two large angled windows behind the wall – one facing south-west to welcome the sea breezes and one framing a magnificent vista of views to the north.
The house has heavily insulated walls and excellent cross ventilation provided by a wall of bi-fold glass doors that fold back to flush a refreshing breeze down the hallway and throughout the home. The reverse cycle air conditioning is always available, but rarely necessary and the insulation also retains warmth in the winter.
On the upper level, the super efficient, ultra-modern galley-style kitchen is at the centre, flanked by the family room to the south and a huge deck commanding a panoramic view of beach and ocean at the north-west corner. Shaded by a louvered ceiling, this is the perfect alfresco location to breathe in the magical vista and the ever changing coastline.
