This outstanding townhouse is located steps from Fifth Avenue on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, close to Central Park and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Situated on the south side of East 79th Street, Manhattan’s most magnificent double-wide boulevard, this mansion is one of ten extraordinary residences in a row forming a uniform ensemble uninterrupted by taller buildings. Reminiscent of the great residential enclaves of London and Paris the street is flooded with sunlight and offers urban vistas unlike any other street on the Upper East Side. Other prominent neighboring residences were designed by noted New York architects including C. P. H. Gilbert and McKim, Mead & White.
Harvey Murdock built this stately 28 ft. wide neo-Georgian style mansion in 1903 together with 14 East 79th Street as a pair for Miss Mary Ogden and her brother Charles. Designed by the architectural firm Little & Browne who created the residence of Henry Clay Frick near Boston, the house was originally a five-story limestone and Roman brick residence. Two additional stories were added in 1960, set back from the original façade and articulated by three dormer windows in a steeply sloping roof, and a buff brick wall above. The original façade is accentuated with a three story bowed bay, and an elevated formal entrance portico supported on Ionic columns. An iron fence encloses a private forecourt leading to a secondary entrance on the lower level. The house currently has 7 stories plus a full cellar, roughly 16,200 S.F. of area, and an elevator serving all floors. There is a spacious roof with spectacular park and city views. Many exquisite original architectural details remain, including wood paneling, plaster moldings, hardwood floors, and numerous fireplaces. The house retains much of its original configuration of grand salons, and represents a rare opportunity to restore the home to its original single-family configuration. Taxes are $0 (current owner is tax - exempt).
