(Frances Mayes)
Frances Mayes Personal Home
“ Where you are is who you are. The further inside you the place moves, the more your identity is intertwined with it. Never casual the choice of place is the choice of something you crave.” – Frances Mayes, Under the Tuscan Sun
Frances Mayes, famous author of Under the Tuscan Sun , and husband Ed have lovingly enhanced another masterpiece just two miles outside the peaceful, historic village of Hillsborough, North Carolina. Encompassing thirty acres, there are enchanting brick walled garden rooms, pastoral views, serene wooded areas, the renowned Eno River, a babbling brook and most of all peace and privacy.
"Chatwood is a paradise for us. There are nine structures on the land including a three-bedroom, 3800 square foot Federalist farmhouse built in 1806. There is a barn that dates to 1770, a guest house and several charming out-buildings that must have been added higgledy-piggledy over the years. The farmhouse was built by the Quakers as an inn and tavern for the gristmill down the lane, at the edge of our property. Our land borders the famed Eno River, which is about six hundred feet away." – Frances Mayes, The Wall Street Journal
A stately grove of mature walnut trees encircles the driveway when you first lay eyes on Chatwood. You then realize it is poised for another two centuries of life. Built in the early nineteenth century and listed on the National Historic Register of Places , the Mayes adhered to those codes during their restoration. The double front doors are a nod to the past and the practicality of the original Quaker builders. One side was an entrance to the tavern and the other was the family’s home. The rooms throughout are substantial in size and the home has been retro fitted to the modern age including the seven fireplaces throughout. Geothermal heating, a new metal roof, a sealed crawl space and insulation are hidden yet valuable modern essentials. Entertaining is a hallmark of the Mayes. The totally modernized kitchen, complete with an original fireplace, makes this a breeze. The main bath rivals any new home with separate sinks and a soaking tub. Hard to find closet space in a historic home is not an issue as the third floor is outfitted as an overflow closet for the main bedroom. More than just a house on an estate, more than just a place, this is a home with a long record of memories.
Friends, family, a special someone, your own solitude embody what a place is and can become. Place is the ever changing backdrop where people engage or you reflect and think. Place can adapt. Place can enhance. Place can evolve. Start your new chapter at Chatwood.
Late summer and some of your closest friends are coming to celebrate good local food and fine wine. The thirty private acres offer several gardens, some walled as botanical rooms, now yielding the heirloom vegetables and roses. The Tuscany inspired dining gazebo is set casually, comfortably for the long, slow Carolina evening. The kitchen, via the pergola, parades a light but sumptuous fare feeding the conversation. The nearby salt-water filtered swimming pool reflects the candles and the dazzling country starlight illuminating the August night. Easily converted into an entertaining venue, the barn constructed in 1770, predates the house and overlooks the pool. Vivaldi plays in the background. This place effortlessly lays the foundation for another fine memory and some new great stories meant to be retold.George Gershwin said it best, " Summertime and the Livin' is Easy ". Chatwood's gardens are in, the days are long and the perfect time to linger by the stream and read a book, perhaps one by Frances Mayes. So why leave the bucolic peace of your place....Chatwood.
