The Castle of Collalto Sabino is located in the historical center of Collalto Sabino, a village of less than 500 inhabitants, at Via del Castello n.1 of the Rieti Province of the Italian region of Lazio. It is situated at 1000 meters above sea level at the highest point of Collalto Sabino. From the castle towers, a 360° panoramic view is offered of the mountains of the Italian National Park (“riserva naturale monte navegna monte cervia”) and numerous characteristic Italian villages in all directions.
The castle itself has a rich historical background and dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries, with the fort dating back as early as 950 AD. In 1641, the castle was purchased by Cardinal Barberini, the nephew of Pope Urban VIII in 1641. It was later restored in the 19th century, with the most recent renovations taking place in 1988-1998. It has both Renaissance and Baroque characteristics, considered to be one of the cultural assets of Italy and is protected by the Italian Heritage committee. It is also considered to be one of the most beautiful villages in Italy (“uno dei borghi piu’ belli di Italia”).
All rooms enjoy both external hillside views as well as internal courtyard views due to the castle being built in a V Shape. The old fort, which is the most historical part of the castle is located within the castle grounds and arguable one of the most impressive pasts of the castle.
The property is accessed through a drawbridge, which takes you onto the main village square. Alternatively there is a spectacular driveway that runs through the extensive and well kept secluded park and garden.
