RED CLIFF HOUSE
Inch, County Kerry, V92 D9K7, Ireland
A most attractive 18th-century home enjoying an enviable and magical position, with spectacular panoramic sea views over Dingle Bay to the Magillicuddy Reeks mountains. Private grounds extend to 2.7 acres or 1.1 hectares.
Built circa 1784 in the late Georgian Villa style there is a refined elegance to the design and architectural merit throughout the house. The attractive stone exterior and natural slate roofing allowing Red Cliff House to effortlessly rest within the picture-postcard setting. Many of the rooms enjoy commanding views, which include rugged coastline, expansive sandy beaches and majestic mountains.
The original layout with the formal reception rooms on the upper floor has been retained but integrated into a more congenial arrangement during comprehensive restoration and extension works in circa 2008. A deliberate effort made to align the extension to the original design characteristics and to retain original features but, importantly, to make the house functional for comfortable and relaxed 21st-century living. The original front door on the upper level is retained but augmented by deliberately informal access, from the wrap-around veranda, on the lower level.
Accommodation on the upper floor includes an ornate entrance hall, a stair hall and the original reception rooms comprising a study, drawing room and dining room. In addition, there is a large bright playroom and three large bedroom suites, one linking to a fourth bedroom. These bedrooms are augmented by a guest suite or apartment on the lower level with three bedrooms. The master bedroom, includes a dressing room and bathroom, faces south and west and enjoys superb elevated sea views.
The reception rooms all face south and enjoy sea views. Original features include ornate ceiling plasterwork, open fires with marble chimneypieces, carved timber door and window architraves with working window shutters and polished timber flooring.
The play room wall is entirely glazed and opens onto a large patio terrace behind the house. The stair hall has ornate ceiling plasterwork, a carved timber staircase and a balcony style opening to the living space below.
The open-plan kitchen and living space on the lower-level easily links to large garden patio terraces from French doors off the glazed wrap-around veranda. A large glazed central roof section making the entire open-plan space feel bright, airy and coastal. The kitchen is well equipped and there is a separate pantry, laundry room and cellar. The linked veranda area is a marvelous living space and links to a cosy alcove snug with a wood stove. Underfloor heating ensuring comfort in all seasons.
Positioned on the famed picture postcard ‘Ring of Kerry’ route and part of the renowned ‘Wild Atlantic Way’ the scenery around Red Cliff House is extremely picturesque and quite exceptional. The juxtaposition of the Atlantic Ocean with wide sandy beaches and sheer cliffs set against a backdrop of tall and rugged mountains is incredibly beautiful. Inch Stand, a 3-minute drive or 10-minute cycle from Red Cliff House is a sandy 3-mile long Blue Flag Beach and popular for surfing (surf school), swimming and sea-angling. There is a pub and restaurant and a beachside café.
Dingle Peninsula has a strong food and drink reputation with Dingle town, a 20-minute drive away, a past ‘Foodie Town of Ireland’ winner. Walking, fishing, golfing, horse racing and tail riding are but a few of the leisure amenities available in the area. Kerry Airport (12 miles or 19 km) is a 20-minute drive and includes private jet facilities.
