GANNOUGHS COTTAGE, CLEGGAN, CLIFDEN, COUNTY GALWAY, IRELAND
A charming traditional Irish cottage enjoying an extraordinary ocean front position in the West of Ireland, within picturesque county Galway.
Spectacularly located on the Aughrus Peninsula, one of the most westerly points in the scenic Connemara cultural region of Galway. Gannoughs Cottage is privately positioned within some 11 acres or 4.45 hectares of lands that span the peninsula, giving double frontage onto the Atlantic Ocean and including a private sandy beach. Extremely picturesque there are panoramic views to Inisbofin Island, Achill Island, Croagh Patrick Mountain, Friar Island, the Twelve Pins Mountains, the Mweelrea Mountains and to Slyne Head.
The historic cottage has been sympathetically upgraded and extended in recent years and is now a pleasant and comfortable home with bright and airy accommodation, which extends to some 1,416 square feet or 131.6 square metres. A small porch leads into a large family room, which faces north and south and has a large feature chimneypiece with an open fire. The kitchen faces south, east and west and is bright and airy with a range of fitted kitchen units, a Stanley oil fired stove, built-in window seating and a large walk-in pantry cupboard. A study interconnects to the family room and a small dining room, which has glazed double French doors to the south facing terrace. A master bedroom suite includes a large bedroom with a feature raised fireplace with open fire, vaulted ceiling with exposed timber beams and a large walk-in wardrobe. Facing north, south and east it enjoys tremendous sea views. A bathroom en-suite has a fitted bath, separate shower, bidet, tiled flooring, a wash-hand-basin and WC. The second bedroom faces north and south and there is a large family bathroom that serves as a laundry room too and has a shower, tiled flooring, plumbing for a washing machine and clothes dryer, a wash-hand-basin and a WC. An additional WC with a wash-hand-basin completes the accommodation. The layout is slightly unorthodox due to the extensions off the original traditional cottage but works and adds great charm and character to the Gannoughs Cottage.
Outside there are 2 outbuildings and an ample car parking area. A large sun terrace, accessed from the kitchen and dining room, is paved in natural stone and faces directly south. It overlooks one of the fields that leads directly to the private and sandy beach. The remaining 2 fields lie immediately across the road from the house and lead down to the second private beach. The fields are in permanent pasture and provide grazing. The picturesque village of Claddaghduff is just a 6 minute or so drive away and has a Sweeney’s Bar and Shop, a primary school and a church. The fishing village of Cleggan is within a about a 9 minute drive and provides further shops, pubs, restaurants and general large village amenities. Attractions in the local area include numerous sandy beaches, deep sea angling and dive sites and pony trekking. Clifden, an attractive market town, is within a 20 minute drive. Ireland West (Knock) airport is a 2 hour drive and has flights to over 20 European destinations.
The Connemara area has a strong association with traditional Irish culture and contains the largest Gaeltacht, Irish speaking area, in Ireland. The Connemara National Park is extensive and includes scenic mountains, expanses of bogs, heaths, grasslands and woodlands. The park is home to Connemara ponies, red deer and an enormous variety of bird-life, including skylarks, stonechats and peregrine falcons. There are a number of walking trails within the park, with many very accessible to Gannoughs Cottage.
The upgrading works in recent years included the installation of new oil fired central heating, window replacement with new double glazed windows and the fitting of tiled flooring throughout.
