Fort Kochi is irresistibly charming and there is something new to discover every time. These twin bungalows are situated 200 mts. away from the beach and within walking distance of St Francis Church and the Chinese fishing nets. Apart from their close proximity to the sites that bring people from all over the world to Fort Kochi, is their very charming and romantic ambience.
These bungalows were designed in the fifties by an old English architectural firm of Pryne, Abbot and Davis for Brooke Bond & Co, an old tea plantation company who wanted their executives to continue to experience the feel of the plantations while they were on mainland.
The current owners of the bungalows, decided to restore and reuse the bungalows for long stay rental for families and mid-size groups. They decided to maintain the original design features as far as possible with a few additions like a pool, a twin-sharing bedroom, a laundry, storeroom, utility room, modern bathrooms and new kitchen, and a beautiful landscaped garden. All the trees are retained and it is a treat to see a flowering frangipani tree that looked as old as the house.
The restoration of Beach-gate Bungalows was a combined effort of many talented individuals - celebrated German architect Dr Klaus Peter Gast & Lucy Philipose for the kitchens and bathroom, to name a few. An idea of having an all glass dining room with wooden frames for the floor to ceiling windows, that opens onto a deck and swimming pool was also implemented.
The interiors are elegantly furnished with furniture that captures the essence of the times. Imagine waking up to the sound of birds twittering on your window sill and stepping on to the terrace and having fresh Nilgiri tea and breathing in the cool sea breezes. The fine sun rays filters through the branches of the mango and jackfruit trees. Banana trees, spice garden and the sparkling water of the pool; you are in your own tropical paradise and the day ahead is full of possibilities. Beach-gate bungalows are a world by themselves with lots to discover.
