Set in an enchanting location in western Jämtland on a peninsula near the rapids between Lake Bodsjön and Lake Tännsjön, this remarkable hunting lodge was built in 1890, and retains its beautiful original details, such as the turret, open verandas, transom windows and jigsaw carpentry. The property is located about 20 kilometres west of Åre, in an area famous for its natural beauty.
The building, was declared an architectural landmark in the early 1980s, and preserves largely all of its original interiors. You enter this house through a large veranda, which leads us into a magnificent hall with period panelling and door lintels. French doors lead to the outer veranda with its western exposure and view of Lake Bodsjön. From the dining room, there are two wonderful salons located in a row, which are also perfect places for socializing and entertaining. The hall and dining room have access to the fully-equipped country kitchen with its dining area and original wood-burning stove, which dates back to the year of construction. The kitchen also has a machine room for the energy and water systems, as well as a separate kitchen entrance. The main floor includes a turret room and a bedroom with an en suite bathroom with a shower, toilet and hand basin. The hall has a staircase to the upper level. This level includes a large furnishable hall, and entrances to four or five bedrooms, one of which, the turret room, has a stairway that leads up to a spire with a terrace where a flag can be raised. The bedrooms have balconies and tiled stoves, and the corner bedrooms has a view of the entire Åreskutan mountain. The hall has access to a furnishable unfinished attic and a large bathroom with exposed ceiling beams, a whirlpool tub, a steam bath and a traditional sauna, a shower, hand basin and toilet. Near the entrance to the bathroom, there is also a separate lavatory with a toilet and a hand basin.
The Hammarströmska villan or Engelska villan (the English Homestead), as it was later called, was built about 1890 by the merchant, Conrad Hammarström, who also was most likely the builder. The house is beautifully located between Lake Bodsjön and Lake Tännsjön, and is a landmark that harks back to the period of early tourism in Jämtland. In 1926, the house was purchased by Paul Remington of Liverpool, who was known in West Jämtland as the Cotton King, as a result of his extensive cotton investments in Venezuela. Whilst Remington was primarily interested in fly-fishing, he was, without doubt, fascinated by the beautiful forests, bogs full of yellow cloudberries, the glittering lakes, and naturally, the glittering mountain summits of this area. During one period, the homestead was owned by a company known as Bergvik och Ala Aktiebolag, and later, by an association. For the past 20 years, the property has been privately owned.
During the past ten years, the house has undergone an extensive renovation, which included the installation of a new roof, a heating system, a new kitchen, as well as a new foundation and a bathroom. In addition, there have been a great many repairs of the various surfaces.
The property also has a guest house and a garage building, as well as a large level gravel area where a helicopter can land.
