The unique and historic property located at Plots 6F and 6G Constitution Hill dates from the late 18th century. A watercolor of the property as seen from the hill to the east clearly shows the two-story building, the entrance of which faced west; the mill to the south; and the buildings whose ruins are now on the southwest corner of this 1.4 acre property. Records illustrate that among the owners of the property over the centuries are Heinrich von Schimmelman and Governor Peter von Scholten. After purchasing the property in late 2005, the present owners embarked on an entire reconstruction of the historic building, removing many of the interior walls both upstairs and downstairs, adding a pitched roof and a front porch with Danish arches, and uncovering and refurbishing (see supplemen - the stone circular stairway that flanked the original, west-facing entrance to the house. The owners then added a two-level porch on the west, a large pavilion on top of the above-ground stone cisterns south of the house, two guest houses, and a pool, designed by architects Hera Psaros and Eduardo Hermida of DesignLab.
The owners chose to retain the historic Caribbean look of the property while incorporating some of the Balinese elements they had come to love on their multiple trips to Indonesia. Balinese-style double doors open onto a covered walkway between the house and the stone cisterns. Hand-carved limestone pedestals wrap the lower half of columns supporting the walkway roof. Carved panels depicting tropical flowers and koi fish are inserted into the walls of the pavilion and large horizontal panels decorate both the small pavilion next to the pool and a wall in the gardens.
