CASTLE HYDE, FERMOY, COUNTY CORK, IRELAND
An impressive and important Irish country home delightfully positioned within some 150 acres on the banks of the Blackwater River. Completed in circa 1801 to a well-executed Palladian style, the house has a striking 3 storey over basement centre block with 7 window bays linking, by straight corridors, to attractive bow-fronted pavilions on either side. Beautifully positioned on the banks of the Blackwater River, regarded as one of Ireland’s best salmon fishing rivers, nearby to Fermoy town (2 miles or 3.3 km). The pleasure grounds are magnificent and include a ruinous 12th century Norman castle (circa 1301) and a myriad of walking paths throughout. The countryside surrounding Castle Hyde within the Blackwater valley is thought to be some of the most beautiful in Ireland. The M8 motorway is accessible 3.1 miles or 5 km away with Cork city 29 miles or 46 km away.
An extensive, sympathetic and lengthy restoration programme undertaken circa 1999-2003 is reputed to have cost in excess of €30 million. There was an immense emphasis on retaining as much originality as possible whilst making the house suitable for today’s living. In 2016 further improvement works to Castle Hyde included a comprehensive redecoration. The house was restored back to its former glory but restored in a manner so that it could be lived in and enjoyed, not to be a museum but a family home. The original and extremely fine interior plasterwork (cornicing, centre roses, wall panels and murals) were restored with specialist gilt-work. Through the renovation works and upgrades the house has truly entered the 21st century.
Benefitting from a south facing orientation, all the principal reception rooms and bedrooms enjoy good natural light. Generous room sizes with high ceilings and large and numerous windows enhancing the feeling of brightness. Advantage is taken of the remarkable riverside position with all the principal rooms overlooking the river, some with dual aspect views, to the hills beyond. In all the accommodation within the house extends to some 35,000 square feet or 3,250 square metres and includes 7 principal reception rooms, 12 bedroom suites and a pool complex. The luxurious master bedroom suite extends to over 3,000 square feet or 280 square metres. An estate lodge completes the accommodation.
All the reception rooms provide comfortable family living rooms yet can combine to create a magnificent and grand entertaining space where large functions and parties of 300 guests have been easily accommodated. In recent years Castle Hyde has been notable for entertaining and guests have included, to name a few, Michael Jackson, Cliff Richard, Maureen O’Hara and The Chieftains. Fed Astaire was a frequent visitor to Castle Hyde in the 1920’s.
The house is backed up against a steep cliff face that enhances its dramatic riverside position but also offers shelter. On the cliff’s stand the 12th century ruins of Carrigansady Castle. The ornamental gardens are located on an elevation to the back of the house. Taking the form of a bosquet or series of radiating paths or walks or alleys they take in a pleasant mix of formal and informal grounds. Manicured lawns stretch along the river bank in front of the house and include a practice golf putting green, croquet court, a garden gazebo and a riverside fishing deck and boat slip-way and a tennis court. Within the lands there is a private golf driving range with undulating banks. The river Blackwater affords angling for both salmon and trout. A garage block accommodates up to 8 motorcars. There are grazing paddocks and a small farmstead. Access to the M8 motorway is within a 10 minute drive and affords good access to Cork International airport, Shannon International airport and Dublin International airport.
