This is a property like no other – a classic Murano 18th century palazzetto rising from the water, yet a whole world apart. Welcome to the rarified world of Aristide Najean, a renowned French painter and glass sculptor who has made on the island of Murano both his personal home and a heavenly Cathedral, a Furnace where he creates and produces top glass design and artistic pieces for international projects and high-end hotels such as the Dorchester in London, Le Parc Monceau in Paris, Palazzina G and Quadri in Venice, as well as for designers such as Philippe Starck, Baccarat, Jean-Michel Willmotte, Patrick Joiun and Sanjit Manku, Bruno Moinard.
The house, completely finished only five years ago after a three year restoration project, is simply stunning, with an artistic and energetic flow you feel from the moment you enter and walk through its many divine and varied spaces, finding yourself in a warm and completely curated home at every level.
At ground floor level the huge and welcoming entrance living space draws you through spacious casual reception rooms as well as towards a beautiful courtyard with historic well with an amazing glass waterfall structure, and on further to a working orchard garden where fruit and vegetables are produced in abundance, giving you the voluptuous feeling of having land on the island. The courtyard and garden together represent around 500 sq/m of private outside space. In addition there is a separate garden annexe.
Leading from the ground floor a wide staircase takes you up almost mesmerically to one of the most stunning living spaces I have ever seen in Venice, with fascinating design features and wonderful light. Together with the many incredible pieces designed by Aristide himself, this is a truly unique home. At this level you are drawn (if you can bear to be) from the central high ceilinged piano nobile living room to the amazing dining room/kitchen, a large and casual space where you want to just sit, eat, and relax with friends, lost in time. Also at this piano nobile level are two incredibly stylish bedrooms and ultra bathrooms, with bespoke furniture designed for the house by the owner.
Up again to a huge mansarda - the perfect place where I will write my first novel - an enormous open plan space with sleeping area as well as a subtly designed and tucked away kitchen space, leading to a spectacular fully south facing terrace with amazing views over the canal, to the beautiful Palazzo Mula, and beyond.
The flow of rooms in this palazzetto, each one with its own poetic character, together with its strong design values, makes this is a truly special home, and lends itself therefore to be the perfect dream weekend place, keys in hand, far from reality. I still feel almost dizzy thinking back on my visit only a few days ago, and wanting to be back there. Before I leave, I feel I should ask the question – what is the next plan? But it’s already obvious to me – Aristide Najean simply cannot stand still, a creative tour de force, his next project calls, among other things a Design Academy to train young artists to think and breathe, simply to create, pencil and notebook in hand.
