Listed Grade II being of architectural and historic importance, Bishops House was built in the early 18th Century by the Reverend James Tait and was extended in the 1830’s by Reverend Charles Blomfeld who went on to become the Bishop of London. The Edwardian west wing was added by Lord Charles Harvey in the early 1900’s. After the second world war the property became Chesterford Country Club and was converted back to a private home around 1990. The front elevation is of classical Georgian symmetry with Flemish bond brick under a slate roof.
Internally the house combines light and spacious reception rooms with comfortable bedroom accommodation on the first and second floors. Of particular note is the substantial entrance hall with an elegant sweeping staircase leading to the first floor. The main reception rooms are beautifully proportioned and many of the original fireplaces have been retained. Approached through the orangery is the indoor swimming pool.
A generous landing on the first floor gives access to the principle bedrooms including the substantial master bedroom with en suite dressing room and bathroom. There are two secondary bedrooms on the second floor.
Bishops House was previously a country club and subject to the necessary planning consents would make an excellent boutique hotel or restaurant.
Lying to the east of the house is an extensive range of garages and workshops constructed of brick under a slate roof. An archway provides access through to the gardens. There is ample space for storing garden machinery together with a workshop area.
The old squash court, now in need of repair, lies to the west of the driveway.
Situated to the east of the house is a charming two bedroom cottage which has recently been refurbished. The cottage is open plan on the ground floor with a sitting room/dining area, a well-fitted kitchen and a conservatory. A paved sitting area affords charming views over the River Cam to the water meadows beyond.
Laid mostly to lawn and studded with a selection of mature trees including chestnut, beech, plane and lime, the gardens slope gently down to the tranquil River Cam and provide a charming and private setting for the house. A paved terrace flanks the south of the house with well stocked borders and views over the lawn to shrubberies, the river and water meadows beyond.
To the west is the all-weather tennis court, which has recently been refurbished and a walled area of garden adjoining the village church.
Situated over the River Cam are the water meadows, an attractive level area of land providing a peaceful nature reserve.
