A design icon by the one of the founders of Modernism in Australian architecture, Harold Desbrowe Annear, this magnificent 1922 residence has been spectacularly transformed into one of Melbourne's finest family homes.
The original Desbrowe Annear design was used as inspiration and innovation for the cutting-edge renovation and extension by sustainable designer Luke Middleton from EME Design. The voluminous, contemporary and carefully detailed two-level addition was designed to open the house to northern light with a seamless connection to the lush botanical garden and swimming pool. The two come together with such vision, the home was awarded the Building Designers Association of Victoria Award for Best Heritage Renovation; whilst also being extensively featured in magazines and television commercials.
The powerful presence of Desbrowe Annear's design is a true showpiece of Modernist Architecture and an important heritage example of his work with its breathtaking semicircular and leadlight enclosed atrium featuring Ionic columns with garlands, now beautifully honoured and enlivened with window seating and clever storage. His signature stepped chimney shafts, and the patented sliding sash windows were specifically designed for The Sallman House.
