Introducing the House of Serendip… set amongst the rolling tea and rice lands of Southern Sri Lanka and just 2/3 hours south of the capital, Colombo, by expressway.
Blessed with an abundance of natures’ finest, the plentiful gardens provide a bounty of fruit and vegetables and the whole place appears to throb with the sound of wildlife, particularly in the cooler evenings. Beautifully manicured tea terraces surround a raised hill (15 metres), upon which sits a four-bedroom bungalow in need of redevelopment. Around the bungalow are vegetable patches, a chicken coup, raised flowerbeds, a traditional Sri Lankan toilet, a well and superb vistas, whilst below at sea level and surrounding the property to the front and sides are just under three acres of paddy fields fed by a natural well sourced from the nearby lake Titigalla.
Rice and tea are established sources of income and self-sufficiency.
Development potential is vast; the bungalow has the possibility for one or two stations more and could be turned into a fantastic luxury home or guesthouse; there is space enough for a small swimming pool and the development of 3/4 cabanas that will feed the areas growing eco-tourism business. There are already a few established hotels in the area and the eco market is buoyant. There is space for the development of additional outbuildings within the seven-foot high perimeter wall and gated entrance, affording peace, privacy and excellent security. The land enjoys the benefit of running fresh water, electricity, a traditional Sri Lankan kitchen and a European style bathroom and toilet. To compliment the areas growing tourism, the government have slated significant local road repairs for 2017/18.
The area is rural, peaceful and supported by a small local infrastructure of a school, a few street side shops and a nearby temple; the area is principally farmland and dominated by rice and tea. Water buffalo languish in paddies; flocks of parakeets flitter through king coconut trees, and mango and banana and Papaya trees support flourishing orchids. Mahogany and Cinnamon trees sit side by side with avocado, ginger, pepper and tomato vines, whilst just 15km’s away lies the beautiful beach resort of Unawatuna and just 6km’s more, is the cricket mad, Unesco heritage city of Galle, a fascinating place for all your conceivable needs and the freshest seafood in the world.
