Carter Hill, located four miles from Lebanon in Russell County, VA is an imposing, architecturally-refined private dwelling
situated on 331 acres of rolling farmland. The house, built in 1919, is prominently situated on a hill overlooking the creek valley and is a highly visible landmark.
The majority of the acreage is retained in agricultural use, with fenced pastures for cattle grazing. There are 18 water troughs throughout the farm. In addition, there is an old chicken barn that is being used for hay storage. The steeper slopes located at the back of the property are covered in timber. The farm is currently leased for cattle and hay production. The owners also have a renewable CREP easement that will expire in Oct. 2016.
The dwelling is a tall two-story Colonial Revival-style mansion with Flemish-bond brick veneer. The building has a temple-fronted center bay. The roof is covered with green-glazed terra cotta tiles, and there are three large interior brick chimneys. The slightly protruding central bay incorporates the first floor entry and a small second story balcony. There is a one story wraparound porch with Ionic columns and ceramic tile flooring.
The interior of Carter Hill features two main living levels, plus a full height basement and a large attic. Each level is approximately 3000SF. The first floor has a wide central passage flanked on each side by two rooms. The four essential first floor rooms (parlor, library, dining room, and master suite) have fireplaces with tiger grain oak mantels. The kitchen retains original windows and pantry built ins but has been updated to include modern conveniences.
The second floor, which also has the center passage plan, includes 4 bedrooms, 2 full baths, a separate water closet and corner sinks in two of the bedrooms. A fifth bedroom, primarily accessed from the rear staircase was historically used for a live-in servant.
The basement includes stone perimeter walls, brick piers, and brick partition walls. Windows provide ample daylight. Mechanical equipment is installed in several places but for the most part the open spaces in the basement are used for storage. A separate cold storage room is located in the basement under the pantry and features stone walls and a poured concrete trough through which cold spring water once circulated.
Carter Hill was designed and built by the architectural and contracting firm W.H. Musser & Son from Abingdon, VA. This Colonial-Revival style house is one of Russell County’s finest rural dwellings of the early twentieth century. Carter Hill was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.
