The country estate of S'Estaca is a collection of seven independent units to include five apartments with ten bedrooms, a "loft", and two cottages, which in total can comfortably accommodate 20 people between them - including staff and children. Set on a 247-acre (100 hectares) plot at Puerto Valldemossa , with direct access to the Mediterranean Sea , S’Estaca enjoys spectacular views thanks to its location at the heart of the Sierra de Tramuntana , a UNESCO World Heritage Site awarded in 2011. The main house dates from around the mid 19th Century and was bought by Archduke Ludvig Salvator of Habsburg, cousin of Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria (1848-1916), in 1878. The Archduke was captivated by Mallorca right from his very first visit in 1867, and became fascinated by the stretch of coastline between Deia and Valldemossa . Having often explored the area from his yachts, ‘Nixie I’ and ‘Nixie II’, he eventually acquired the entire 16km stretch of coastline, including S’Estaca. Having obtained S’Estaca, the Archduke was inspired by the traditional yet complex architecture found in the Aeolian Islands, a volcanic archipelago in the Tyrrhenian Sea off Sicily’s north-eastern coastline, when he renovated and enlarged this wonderful property. And it was here that he spent the best years of his life alongside his partner Catalina Homar, a native Mallorcan who was official administrator for his affairs in Mallorca. Sadly the First World War forced him to return to Vienna, and the Archduke never came back. In recent times, in 1990, S’Estaca was further renovated and enlarged to its present status as a magnificent private summer residence. Via a pretty walk under the pine trees, the boundaries of this wonderful property lead to a coastal fishing hamlet, also known as S’Estaca, where 16 small cottages nestle into the rocks. They all belong to fortunate homeowners who enjoy the privilege of living in the peace and tranquillity of the Tramuntana coastline, apart from one cottage which, along with a small jetty, belongs to the estate. Finally, at the top of the mountain, an ancient chapel is also included but it was struck in two by a lightning bolt in the 1960s.
