57 Shalom was technically 1, when Rebecca and John arrived ten years ago. "We were the first house on the street!" John recalls. The solace didn't last, as Barrie's house boom meant they were quickly joined by several more new builds, all of which needed #1... or rather, #57 to establish utilities. "They used us for hydro, for cable, for water..." adds Rebecca. "You're a sort of Patriarch of the street" we suggest, as John and Rebecca laugh. The friendly couple have certainly been comfortable serving as custodians for friends and family over the years...by their count, no less than 18 in-laws, kids, and grandkids have rolled up to the double driveway for family dinners, birthday parties or seeking temporary lodging. The two have always been happy to oblige, even at the expense of John's electronic train set. (Displaced from the basement to one of the three upstairs bedrooms so Rebecca's daughter could have a space of her own) Sitting a few minutes from the GO station and several golf courses, Shalom Way straddles the line between city and country, and is steps across from one of the more plentful greenspaces in the city. "The Secret Garden" Rebecca calls it, a leafy hub where neighbours walk their dogs, where Deer gallop by in the winter, where the kids fish in the pond or spend many hours setting new playground records for most times down a slide. It's during the summer when the Secret Garden really comes to life though, as the community puts on their own fireworks display and open up their backyard barbecues to celebrate long weekends. "We'll miss those" Rebecca admits. What else will they miss?"Every winter..." Rebecca begins, looking through the big living room window at the Secret Garden, "I hear the sound of Geese soaring over the house. Some people find it too loud" she says. "But I love it."This memory prompts her to add one small condition for the next family to live here.
